Biography

Matt Sakatani Roe is an American/Japanese director of photography. Born and raised in Alabama, he studied photography at the Maine Photographic Institute and USC.

He has been based in LA since 2007 and has worked on numerous commercials for international brands such as Chevrolet, Procter and Gamble, Kellogg’s, Olay, and music videos for notorious artists such as Michael Jackson, Moby, Jason Mraz, Linkin Park, and Silversun Pickups. He also worked as the second unit DP on Mark Pellington’s I Melt With You. He also collaborated with well-known DPs such as David Devlin, Janusz Kaminski, Eric Schmidt, and directors Don Broida, Mark Pellington, and Darren Lynn Bousman to name a few. He recently worked on Mark Pellington’s new feature film Nostalgia (starring John Hamm, Ellen Burstyn, and Bruce Dern). 

He was the DP on Michael Nakache’s The Passenger and Transference. Together they share the same visual references and passion for aesthetics.

Matt brings to any film his remarkable sense of lighting and composition combined with speed, creativity, and efficiency.
